Achievement Awards 2020

If you ask any dean of an academic college to name their favorite part of their job, the answer is very likely to be, “Fostering and celebrating student success.”  That certainly is my answer, and I am delighted that we are gathered virtually to celebrate the academic achievement of outstanding students in the College of Fine Arts.

We often talk about achievement in the arts in terms of talent and innate ability.  The students we are recognizing certainly have those attributes.  But, more importantly, I would argue that you have earned your recognition today through discipline, determination, hour-upon-hour of hard work—what Malcolm Gladwell has described as the 10,000 hours needed to master a discipline or practice.

With these accolades, we celebrate not only your individual success, but also the critical ways in which your creativity and intellectual inquiry contributes to the growth and vitality of the community of practitioners and scholars that comprises the College of Fine Arts.  Thank you for enriching us all through your achievement.

I am proud of you, and delighted to recognize your accomplishments.  Congratulations to each of you!
